The ideas you’re tired of repeating may be the very ones your audience is just starting to remember.
It’s a question I wish more authors would ask, because most worry about the opposite.
A few weeks ago, an author I coach said something I hear all the time.
“I feel like I keep saying the same thing.”
She wasn’t complaining, rather she was worried.
She’d been writing about the same core ideas for months. They showed up in her newsletter, her podcast interviews, her LinkedIn posts, and her conversations with prospective clients. She wondered if people were getting bored.
A valid thought!
When you live inside your own ideas every day, repetition often feels excessive. You’ve written the article, explained the concept. and talked about it on three podcasts.
You might even have recently said some version of it to a client.
How often do you need to repeat the same message before people start to remember you?
It’s a question I wish more authors would ask, because most worry about the opposite.
I’ll admit that I get bored saying the same thing over and over.
I’ve spent years circling the same handful of ideas. So I switch things up. I try a new angle, swap the story, change the metaphor, come at it from a different direction. Anything to keep myself from sounding like a broken record.
The Message You Hear Isn’t the Message They Hear
This is one of the strangest parts of building authority.
You experience your message from the inside.
Your audience experiences it in fragments.
They might see one LinkedIn post while waiting for a meeting to start. A month later, they might hear you on a podcast while driving. Then one of your articles lands in their inbox, but they don’t read it until the weekend.
You see repetition.
They see scattered encounters.
And those encounters need to connect before something important happens.
They start to associate you with an idea. And it’s that association where authority becomes visible.
After more than 30 years working with nonfiction authors, I’ve noticed most understand this intellectually but struggle with it emotionally.
They want to be interesting and at the same time, offer something new.
They want every article, interview, or post to feel fresh. And, there’s nothing wrong with that. Curiosity makes good writers even better writers.
But a constant stream of new ideas can make it harder for people to understand what you stand for.
If you talk about twenty different things equally often, your audience could enjoy what you say without ever remembering what you’re known for.
Familiarity Is Doing More Work Than You Realize
Think about the experts you know and trust.
Chances are, you can sum up what your favorite experts stand for in a sentence or two. That’s because you’ve heard the same core ideas from them more than once, even when the stories and examples changed.
Over time, you began to connect that person with that topic.
That’s how authority grows. Expertise matters, but people also need to associate your name with it. And that takes repetition.
Not the kind where you say exactly the same thing over and over. Think of it more like looking at the same idea from different angles.
You might tell a new story, answer a different question, or apply the idea to a new situation. You might explain it one way to a beginner and another way to someone with more experience.
The message stays consistent, but the way you share it changes.
We Often Stop Just Before Recognition Begins
I think authors often underestimate how long it takes for a message to stick because we’re constantly being told to move faster.
Grow your audience. Create more content. Launch something new. Post more often.
But authority usually builds more quietly than that.
Someone reads something you wrote and thinks, “That’s interesting.” They come across you again and think, “She talks about this a lot.” Then, over time, that becomes, “She really knows this subject.”
Eventually, you become the person they think of when the topic comes up.
That progression takes time. You can’t rush someone from first noticing you to seeing you as an authority.
What you can do is keep showing up with a clear, consistent message and give people enough chances to make the connection.
That’s why changing your message too quickly can work against you. Just as people are starting to recognize what you stand for, you move on to something else.
I’ve seen authors abandon a strong idea because one article didn’t get much response, or change their positioning because a few LinkedIn posts fell flat.
Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with the message.
It simply hasn’t had enough time to take root.
Your Book Has Already Given You a Clue
One of the things I love about working with nonfiction authors is that the book often already contains the foundation of their authority.
You’ve spent months, maybe years, thinking deeply about your subject. You’ve developed stories, insights, examples, questions, and your own point of view.
Then the book comes out and suddenly there’s pressure to talk about something new.
I’ve always found that strange.
Your book doesn’t lose its value once it’s published. In many ways, that’s when the ideas finally get a chance to do their real work.
You can take one idea from the book and develop it in an article. You can answer a related question on a podcast, use the concept in a workshop, tell the story behind it in a newsletter, or connect it to something happening in your industry.
That isn’t repeating yourself.
It’s giving people more chances to connect you with the ideas you want to be known for.
The Question I’d Rather You Ask
Instead of asking, “Have I already talked about this?” try asking, “Have people had enough chances to remember me for this?”
That small shift changes the focus.
The first question is about how familiar you are with the message. The second is about how familiar your audience is with you.
Building authority doesn’t mean coming up with something new every week. It means getting clear about the ideas that are worth repeating.
The ideas you believe in. The ideas that help the people you most want to reach. The ideas that connect your book, your expertise, and the opportunities you want to create.

What a terrific reminder, and just when I was beginning to worry about feeling repetitious. But I know you’re absolutely right that that not only do people miss a large part of what you post, but they don’t “see” or “hear” it the way you do when you’re posting similar messages. I love that I’m beginning to be known as an authority for just those things that I feel I’m repeating all the time.
